Biological Collection Database for NHM&RC, Mizoram University

Project Overview:

We had the distinct privilege of partnering with the Natural History Museum & Research Centre (NHM&RC) at Mizoram University to design and launch a comprehensive digital portal and biological collection database (nhmrc.in). Working closely with regional academic experts, this project was conceived to digitally archive and globally showcase the rich tapestry of Mizoram’s biodiversity, geological history, and natural treasures. The platform serves dual purposes: as a rigorous institutional repository for researchers and as an engaging, public-facing educational gateway.

Scope of Work:

  1. Design and Development: We developed a highly visual and structured web platform tailored for academic documentation and public engagement. Recognizing the importance of universal digital inclusivity, we integrated an advanced suite of web accessibility features—including dyslexia-friendly modes, ADHD reading profiles, text-to-speech capabilities, and adjustable contrast and text spacing settings—ensuring the museum’s wealth of scientific data is barrier-free for all users.
  2. Biological Specimen Database: A core technical component of this project was the architecture of a robust digital repository for natural history data. We structured a scalable database system to carefully categorize and digitally display the museum’s diverse archives. This includes dedicated digital exhibits for their Mycology Archives, Botanical Wonders, and Paleontological Treasures, allowing users to explore specific endemic species, fungal specimens, and regional fossil records.
  3. Content Management & Institutional Archiving: The platform includes an intuitive, customized backend tailored specifically for museum curators and staff. This allows them to seamlessly update specimen records, upload high-resolution gallery images, manage visitor information, and publish institutional news and events without requiring ongoing technical intervention.

Results:

The launch of the NHM&RC digital portal successfully bridged the gap between academic biological research and public accessibility. By providing a modern, easily navigable, and highly inclusive digital archive, the museum is now equipped to securely document its vast, growing biological collections while simultaneously educating a wider audience about the region’s unique flora, fauna, and geology.

We are incredibly proud to have provided the digital foundation for this vital academic institution, safeguarding Mizoram’s natural history for future generations.
